"Waiting On" Wednesday #17

“Waiting on” Wednesday is a weekly event hosted at Breaking the Spine that spotlights an upcoming release (or releases) that we’re eagerly anticipating.

My picks:

The Catastrophic History of You & Me
By: Jess Rothenberg
Publisher: Dial
Release Date: January 17, 2012

Brie’s life ends at sixteen: her boyfriend tells her he doesn’t love her, and the news breaks her heart – literally.

But now that she’s D&G (dead and gone), Brie is about to discover that love is way more complicated than she ever imagined. Back in Half Moon Bay, her family has begun to unravel. Her best friend has been keeping secrets about Jacob, the boy she loved and lost – and the truth behind his shattering betrayal. And then there’s Patrick, Brie’s mysterious new guide and resident Lost Soul… who just might hold the key to her forever after.

With Patrick’s help, Brie will have to pass through the five stages of grief before she’s ready to move on. But how do you begin again, when your heart is still in pieces?

Aside from the obvious melodrama of a sixteen-year-old actually dying of a broken heart when her boyfriend breaks up with her (I’m hoping there’s more to it than that, honestly), this looks like it could be really good. I’m definitely looking forward to seeing where Jess goes with it. And I love the cover, isn’t it cool?!

Dragonswood
By: Janet Lee Carey
Publisher: Dial
Release Date: January 5, 2012

Wilde Island is in an uproar after the recent death of its king. The uneasy pact between dragons, fairies, and humans is fraying, and a bloodthirsty witch hunter with a hidden agenda whips villages into frenzies with wild accusations. Tess, a blacksmith’s daughter from a tiny hamlet near the mysterious Dragonswood, finds herself caught in the crosshairs of fate when she is accused of witchery and has to flee for her life along with her two best friends.

Not even Tess’s power to see the future can help the girls as they set off on their desperate journey, but she keeps having visions of a man wielding a sword. And when she finally meets him, Tess has no idea how to handle the magnetic attraction she feels for him, or the elusive call she hears from the heart of the Dragonswood.

In this epic romance, an ancient prophecy comes true in a way neither dragon, fairy, nor human would have predicted.

Oh, I am SO excited for this one. It’s been such a long time since I’ve read a good high fantasy and this one sounds fantastic. Fairies and dragons and witches and ancient prophecies and epic romance… how could it not be great?

Tempest (Tempest #1)
By: Julie Cross
Publisher: St. Martin’s Griffin
Release Date: January 3, 2012

The year is 2009. Nineteen-year-old Jackson Meyer is a normal guy… he’s in college, has a girlfriend… and he can travel back through time. But it’s not like the movies – nothing changes in the present after his jumps, there’s no space-time continuum or broken flux capacitors – it’s just harmless fun.

That is… until the day strangers burst in on Jackson and his girlfriend, Holly, and during a struggle with Jackson, Holly is fatally shot. In his panic, Jackson jumps back two years ago to 2007, but this is not like his previous time jumps. Now he’s stuck in 2007 and can’t get back to the future.

Desperate to somehow return to 2009 to save Holly but unable to return to his rightful year, Jackson settles into 2007 and learns what he can about his abilities.

But it’s not long before the people who shot Holly in 2009 come looking for Jackson in the past, and these “Enemies of Time” will stop at nothing to recruit this powerful young time-traveler. Recruit… or kill him.

Piecing together the clues about his father, the Enemies of Time, and himself, Jackson must decide how far he’s willing to go to save Holly… and possibly the entire world.

This is one of those books that I’ve seen around a lot, but for some reason I never properly read the description. Which is dumb of me, I know. I don’t know why I do that. But anyway, now that I have finally read it and actually know what it’s about, I am even MORE eager to read it, because it sounds awesome! A little bit like the movie Jumper, but still awesome. Also, I love how the last paragraph randomly mentions “clues about his father,” that made me laugh. Of course he has a mysterious father. Haha. Oh, and last thing, I’m pretty excited about the fact that Jackson is a) a guy (male perspective!), and b) in college (older protagonist, whoo!).

That’s it for me, let me know what you’re waiting on and I’ll come check it out!
