"Waiting On" Wednesday #12

"Waiting on" Wednesday is a weekly event hosted at Breaking the Spine that spotlights an upcoming release (or releases) that we're eagerly anticipating.

My picks for this week:

Juliet Immortal
By: Stacey Jay
Publisher: Delacorte Books for Young Readers
Release Date: August 9, 2011

From Goodreads:

“These violent delights have violent ends
And in their triumph die, like fire and powder,
Which as they kiss consume.”
 - Romeo and Juliet by William Shakespeare

The most tragic love story in history…

Juliet Capulet didn’t take her own life. She was murdered by the person she trusted most, her new husband, Romeo Montague, a sacrifice made to ensure his own immortality. But what Romeo didn’t anticipate was that Juliet would be granted eternity, as well, and would become an agent for the Ambassadors of Light. For 700 years, she’s fought Romeo for the souls of true lovers, struggling to preserve romantic love and the lives of the innocent. Until the day she meets someone she’s forbidden to love, and Romeo, oh Romeo, will do everything in his power to destroy that love.

I think this one looks awesome, although I do think it will be weird to read about Juliet with someone other than Romeo. They’re just so classic, you know? Also, this was originally supposed to come out on September 13, but the release date got moved up one whole month! Which means that it’s out next week! So this is hardly a “waiting on” novel at all. :) Go buy it next Tuesday and swoon over the pretty pretty cover.

You Have Seven Messages
By: Stewart Lewis
Publisher: Delacorte Books for Young Readers
Release Date: September 13, 2011

From Goodreads:

It’s been a year since Luna’s mother, the fashion-model wife of a successful film director, was hit and killed by a taxi in the East Village. Luna, her father, and her little brother, Tile, are still struggling with grief. When Luna goes to clean out her mother’s old studio, she’s stunned to find her mom’s cell phone there – charged and holding seven unheard messages. As Luna begins to listen to them, she learns more about her mother’s life than she ever wanted to know… and she comes to realize that the tidy tale she’s been told about her mother’s death may not be the whole truth.

First off, I really like the cover for this one. It’s very simple, but there’s something so lovely about it. And I’m definitely intrigued by the seven messages. I’m slightly reminded of Jay Asher’s 13 Reasons Why, which has a similar concept of someone finding recordings about a person’s life after they’re gone. Totally different plot, of course, but an intriguing idea either way.

As I Wake
By: Elizabeth Scott
Publisher: Dutton Juvenile
Release Date: September 15, 2011

From Goodreads:

What if you woke up and didn’t know where you were? What if you didn’t know who you were? And what if, when your memories started to come back – what if they didn’t match the you that you’re supposed to be?

Ava is welcomed home from the hospital by a doting mother, lively friends, and a crush finally beginning to show interest. There’s only one problem: Ava can’t remember any of them – and can’t shake the eerie feeling that she’s not who they say she is.

Ava struggles to break through her amnesiac haze as she goes through the motions of high- school life, but the memories that surface take place in a very different world, where Ava and familiar-faced friends are under constant scrutiny and no one can be trusted. Ava doesn’t know what to make of these visions, or of the boy who is at the center of them all, until he reappears in her life and offers answers… but only in exchange for her trust.

This looks uh-maaaaaaazing. It sounds potentially dystopian, but I love the fact that we don’t really know. And I’ve always been fascinated with amnesia, both in real life and in fiction. Can you even imagine not remembering anything and having to put your trust in (to you) complete strangers to tell you who you are and what you should believe and who you should trust? It’s terrifying. And Elizabeth Scott is so fantastic, I’ve really enjoyed all of her other books. This one looks so different, I can’t wait to see what she does with it.

What awesome books are you waiting on?
